A House That Has Outlived Centuries

Image (70).jpg

Tucked into the ancient hamlet of Langaford in the heart of North Devon, Whites Farmhouse is one of the oldest continuously standing farmhouses in the region.

Listed by Historic England in January 1986 as a Grade II building of special architectural and historic interest, the farmhouse dates to the 17th century and may be considerably older. Its cob walls, built upon stone rubble footings and whitewashed in the Devon tradition, have been standing for over 400 years. A massive projecting cob chimney stack with set-offs still dominates the left gable end, exactly as it would have in the 1600s.

The hamlet of Langaford itself is said to date back to the medieval period, sitting within the ancient parish of Ashwater, a place already old when it appeared in the Domesday Book of 1086. Two Bronze Age barrows stand on nearby Langaford Moor, reached by historic droveways that begin almost at the farmhouse door.

Though the house has been thoughtfully modernised to offer every luxury, its soul remains untouched. The original features have been carefully preserved rather than removed, concealed behind modern comfort, waiting to be rediscovered. A curated 'Step Back in Time' book of photographs and stories of the old farmhouse and its former inhabitants is your guide to the centuries that built this place.

The Transformation: Now & Then

“The interior, though modernised, conceals rather than removes its early features, they are present in every wall, every stone, every beam above your head.”
